Dr Dafydd Huws – Mynydd Gorddu a Chaerffili
Mynydd Gorddu
Mae’r darlun olew hwn yn deyrnged i’r Dr Dafydd Huws, y seiciatrydd adnabyddus a’r arloeswr ynni gwynt, ac mae’n ymgais i ddathlu ei fywyd ac i gofnodi ei frwdfrydedd afiaethus dros Gymru a’r amgylchedd. Bu marwolaeth Dafydd yn golled fawr i’w deulu ac i Gymru.
Mae’r llun yn seiliedig ar olygfa o fferm Mynydd Gorddu ger Aberystwyth ac mae’r fferm a’r melinau gwynt ar y gorwel i mi yn sumbol o botensial datblygu’n llwyddiannus yng nghefngwlad.
Roedd gennyf edmygedd mawr o Dafydd fel person o argyhoeddiad arloesedd ac afiaeth ac roedd ei frwdfrydedd yn heintus.
Roedd yn gymeriad unigryw a chyflawn, yn ddawnus a deallus, yn Gymro o argyhoeddiad, yn wleidydd, yn Gristion, yn amaethwr, yn ddyn busnes a bardd ac roedd yn gwmniwr difyr ac yn dynnwr coes hwyliog.
Ac yntau’n gefnogwr brwd dros y symudiad i ddiogelu’r amgylchedd a’r blaned, fe gofleidiodd y dechnoleg o gynhyrchu pŵer o’r gwynt fel cyfrwng i gyfrannu tuag at leihau allyrion carbon ac mae’n cael ei ystyried fel ‘tad’ y diwydiant ynni gwynt yng Nghymru.
Mae’r fferm wynt a ddatblygodd ar dir ei fferm Mynydd Gorddu ger Bontgoch yng ngogledd Ceredigion yn gofeb anrhydeddus iddo.
Bu’r broses o ennill caniatậd i godi’r fferm wynt ar dir Mynydd Gorddu yn gyfnod anodd iddo a gwynebodd feirniadaeth ac ymosiadau personol digon mileinig gan rai o’r nifer fach o wrthwynebwyr. Roedd yn fynydd mawr iddo ei ddringo ond bellach mae’r melinau wedi cymryd eu lle yn urddasol ar y mynydd a’r manteision yn amlwg o safbwynt cynhyrchu ynni glận a’r gefnogaeth i’r cymunedau lleol trwy gronfa gymunedol y prosiect - Cronfa Eleri.
Roedd gweledigaeth Dafydd wrth ddatblygu’r fferm wynt yn gymaint o ysgogiad i ddatblygu’r cymunedau Cymraeg ac oedd e fel ymgais i ddiogelu’r amgylchedd - agwedd y mae llawer o wrthwynebwyr ffermydd gwynt yn gwbwl ddall ohono
Dr Dafydd Huws - Mynydd Gorddu and Caerffili This oil painting has been created as a tribute to Dr Dafydd Huws, the renowned psychiatrist and pioneer of wind energy, to celebrate his life and to mark his deep commitment and enthusiasm for Wales and the environment. His death was a big loss to his family and to Wales.
The picture is based on a view of Mynydd Gorddu near Aberystwyth showing the wind farm on the horizon and both are symbols representing the potential for development and success in rural Wales.
I had a huge respect for Dafydd as a man of principle and innovation and his enthusiasm was infectious.
Dafydd was a one-off and an all-encompassing character, intelligent and talented, a patriotic Welshman, he had a keen interest in engineering, and was active in politics, a Christian, a farmer, a businessman and a poet. He had a humorous and jolly approach to life.
He was committed to the need to protect the environment and the future of the planet and he embraced the role of wind energy as a contributing factor to reducing carbon emissions. He is seen as the ‘father’ of wind energy in Wales
The wind farm he developed on his land at Mynydd Gorddu near Bontgoch, Ceredigion stands as a tribute to his vision.
The process of developing the wind farm was a difficult time for him as he was faced with personal and infuriating attacks and criticism by a small number of objectors. It became an uphill struggle for him and was a huge personal challenge but today the wind turbines stand majestically on the horizon and the benefits are clear to both the environment and to the local communities through the wind farm’s funding arm Cronfa Eleri.
His vision and enthusiasm for wind energy was as much to do with the rejuvenation of rural communities and the Welsh culture as it was a scheme to safeguard the environment, but the objectors appear to be blind to this potential
